telegraphed to me on the 9th instant that three of
them were stranded there and that no work could be
found for them. He requested permission to forward
them to Callao, as deck passengers. To this I
agreed, as I had a good offer of work for them on the
estate of the Prime Minister Senor Lequia, if they
should be sober and industrious men.
Two of them arrived here last week and one of
them came to see me. He stated that he had been em-
ployed in the Indian Police force at Hongkong; but
he produced no papers and in appearance and manner
seemed so entirely shifty and untrustworthy that I
could not recommend him conscientiously for any em-
ployment.
Mr. Wilson will get rid of these persons as
best he can and it is to be hoped that we shall not
have many more of them to deal with.
I have paid £3.4.9., for the passages of the
said individuals from Salaverry to Callao and I pro-
pose, with your sanction, to include this sum as an
incidental
